My Creative Process: 4 Steps to Success

Story Maker

Wrestling is only for the brave. Sometimes, we need a little push to overcome fear. However, it’s not just about emotion—most of the time, we need anonymity, the ability to blend in, or the power of a persona to become who we should or want to be.

To be a wrestling character writer, it’s important to know not just what you want to create but what you can create. As a wrestling writer, you must understand the sport, but being a professional wrestler yourself allows you to test your ideas and bring them to life with firsthand experience.

My Creative Process: 4 Steps to Success

You don’t choose to create a character—inspiration finds you. It comes from vague ideas, fleeting experiences, and even the smallest details. The chirping of a bird could inspire a song, which then shapes an identity, ultimately leading to a well-defined character. If you want to create one, start by seeing life with wonder and finding creative value in everything that happens to you.

Sure, you can take inspiration from cultures, trends, and historical events, but I recommend starting with the ordinary—everyday moments that you can transform into a fantasy with a touch of reality. A seemingly "normal" person with a unique trait becomes unforgettable. In this business, we give everything for the audience. There’s no point in creating a character that only you like if it doesn’t connect with the people.

Every idea is worth exploring. No matter how strange, extravagant, or unserious it seems, it’s always useful to test, practice, and learn through failure.

Studying psychology and psychoanalysis forces you to develop a character’s backstory—understanding the conflicts that shape their identity and mindset. A warrior doesn’t become a warrior without battles, and that’s what you need to explore.

Always put yourself in your character’s shoes. Whether they’re a firefighter, a police officer, a god of war, or a musician, understanding their limits, weaknesses, and fears is essential. I recommend connecting with your creation—this is what makes them human and organic.

Is your character good or evil? But who really decides what’s good or bad? The foundation of whether they are a heel or face will always be their personal story. Finding the perfect candidate to bring your character to life is one of the biggest challenges.

When designing their look, lean into clichés—they help establish identity. A person’s clothing reflects their personality, and in wrestling, it needs to be crystal clear. A child, a teenager, an adult, and even an elderly person should be able to immediately understand who the character is.

Personality should be reinforced in everything—the way they move, talk, walk, and even how they stare. You will know when you've found the perfect person to embody your character.
